London Trip
Nov. 11th, 2008 | 07:34 am
Feeling:
cheerful
The trip to London this weekend was a success! My feet still haven’t fully recovered (they’re all raw at the bottom XD) but it was a success! We managed to go see most of the shops and the places we intentioned to see, only skipping out on a few things because we were so exhausted.
The weekend started off with about an hour delay at the airport, due to crap weather between Netherlands and UK. The plane only landed about 10 minutes after it was about to take off. But, no biggy. The airport is a good place to kill a little time, we spend some time trying to locate the Starbucks there (it turned out it was in a whole different hall and we couldn’t reach it ;x) and the seats we ended up in were comfy. Plus, we’re expert train travels here so delay is just another fact of life for us.
In the end we arrived at our B&B at around noon. We’d booked a room in Central Hotel, a small B&B about 10 seconds away from King’s Cross station. We’d stayed there a few years earlier and while the B&B itself is moderate, the location is just wonderful. Was in for a little shock when it turned out that we had yet to pay for our stay, and I had to take part with a 110 quid I didn’t expect :X It put a stopper on all the anime and manga I had planned to buy. My own damn fault for not properly checking on things. It turns out my creditcard -was- billed for an amount that month but it was a payment for Amazon. I just never bothered to check the details.
We spend the rest of Friday walked around the city. First stop was the Subway near Charing Cross, where I had the best lunch -ever-. Yay for cheddar cheese on Subway sandwiches O.O This is a luxury the Subways in the Netherlands have yet to discover. After we had devoured our lunch we crossed the street to Trafalgar Square and from there we walked towards Piccadilly Circus. We spend some time in the Japan Centre where I bought some Pocky, yay XD After that we went back to the B&B to rest up for a bit and after that we set out towards the London Eye. I was all set to overcome by fear of heights and take a ride in it when we discovered that a single ticket costs 15 quid. A little expensive, especially when I couldn’t be a 100% I wouldn’t be closing my eyes halfway and not see anything anyway. So we walked along the Thames for a while and then went back to King’s Cross where we had dinner at the Burger King (veggie burgers, yay!) and ended up having an early night, saving our strengths for the next day.
And boy, did we need it. The next day we left the B&B at 9.30 and first went to the British Museum, where we had a wonderful old skool trip through the Egyptian gallery and also the Asian gallery. Afterwards we went straight to Gosh! were I bought myself Naruto 27, especially for the Kakashi Chronicle XD By now it was positively pissing down outside, so we went to ‘our’ Starbucks on Great Russell Street to relax. I had a greeaaaaat Toffee Nut Latte and some caramel/chocolate shortbread (which was so good ;_;). We some time there while I read through my manga.
Of course, by the time we left it was raining down even harder XD We made our way over to the Forbidden Planet which was only a short walk away. As awesome as ever, the FP nearly gave my fangirl circuit an overload X.x I think about half the contents of the store passed through my hands by the time we left. I came away with ‘only’ the first two volumes to the manga Brave Story and volume 17 of Full Metal Alchemist.
After that we went to a shop in Notting Hill called ‘Books for Cooks’. They have like 8000 different books with recipes from nearly all parts of the world. We ended up hiking through Notting Hill which was pleasant even though I was already exhausted at this point. My sister came away from this shop with two books on Japanese cooking (sushi party coming on soon ;x) and after that we went straight back to the B&B to rest our legs and feet for a bit. Because that night we had a Ghost Walk!
The Ghost Walk itself was okay, not as scary as I had expected it to be. The stories were mostly historically interesting and we got to see a lot of special little places I would never had discovered by myself. We started off at Bank underground station (funny fact, we went in a little early so we could have something to eat in that area before the start. Who KNEW that EVERYTHING in the Bank district would be closed on a Saturday evening X.x We even came across a closed Starbucks. That was freaking than the entire Ghost Walk to be honest) and walked through the district until we eventually came to St. Pauls. Besides the great stories, we also saw the house were A Chrismas Carol was born and the place they filmed the Leaky Cauldron for the Harry Potter movie XD The guy leading the tour was great, he had a wonderful voice and was really good at telling stuff (well, duh. I’m pretty sure he was the boss man).
After that we returned home and my legs and feet hurt so much I barely slept that night. The next day we packed and left around 10. We had a late flight, we didn’t consider the fact that we’d be so tired when we booked the flights. So we ended up having to kill a lot of time without really having the energy to do something. In the end we went to a Starbucks on Piccadilly Circus and to the HMV on Oxford Circus. We came across another bookshop on Oxford Circus (I forgot the name :x) were I bought volume 9 and 10 to Ceres, a big yay because I had not been able to find volume 9 at Gosh! or the Forbidden Planet.
After that we went to the airport and we arrived about 3 hours before check in even opened. So we just went to the Starbucks, found ourselves some comfy seats and just waited it out. We had dinner that night at Yo Sushi, which was a totally awesome little restaurant behind customs. We ate so much more than we had intended and ended up on the plane feeling pretty stuffed. The return flight went really well, and we landed only 10 minutes or so later than planned.
And that was the end! I was home at around 11 and I went to bed almost immediately. But the weekend was totally worth the exhaustion and pain!
Piccies!
